Some Cork Virgins
2022
hand-stitched, laser printed zine
Taking inspiration from the self-initiated photobook assignments of Ed Ruscha, Some Cork Virgins records Marian statues from around Cork city. As vestiges of another time in Ireland’s history, these religious public sculptures are no less cared for in the 21st century, freshly painted and maintained. Their links to the contentious history of the church and state notwithstanding, the collection of images here seek to present these statues as totems of a fluid communal spirituality, akin to the Shinto shrines of Japan.
